Pecten Shells

Bivalve is the common name for any mollusk characterized by a shell divided into two valves hinged at one side. They are of the class Bivalvia, also called Pelecypoda. There are more than 6,000 known species; they include the clam, cockle, mussel, oyster, and scallop or pecten. Most live in salt water, but many species survive in fresh water. Pectens, often called scallops and fan shells, are members of the Pectinidae Family. The shells are fan shaped to almost round and present a relatively flat profile. Those from tropical regions can be very colorful.

About the Living Shell and animal

Bivalves have two half shells.    Bivalves feed by filtering out small marine organisms from the water.    Bivalves have lost their ability to move since is was no longer necessary for obtaining food.

They are well protected by their shells.   Bivalve may swim by flapping their shells rapidly but generally are buried in the ocean floor and immobile.

Bivalve suck water in through the mouth.  The gills have a sticky mucus that traps the marine organisms.  Cilia moves the sticky mucus into the gut. A continuous supply of sticky mucus is made at the gills.
