Contest Winner for Aug/Sept.
Congratulations: Jen Kuhns

augcontest.JPG (35770 bytes)               So What is it?  Well lets let the winner tell us?

These are most likely Cowrie Shells, and the young lady is probably a Maasai Bride. The Cowrie is considered a fertility symbol to the Maasai and is used in wedding accoutrements as a sort of invitation to the spirits to bless a marriage with many children. The bride and/or her mother would have made it for the ceremony.  The Cowrie has been used throughout history by many cultures in Africa as "money" and is/was especially revered as a fertility symbol by both the Maasai and the Egyptian cultures. Amazingly enough, the cowrie is a very popular shell in the US for decorative items like chimes. It became popular around the 1960's, possibly due to the influence of the Civil Rights Movement and the drive among African-Americans to rediscover their ancestry. It has remained a sought after item even today.

CONGRATULATIONS Again Jen
